## The quick answer

**Pick Obsidian** if you enjoy building systems, want your notes as plain files on your own device, and have a track record of actually maintaining a setup.

**Pick Saner.AI** if your notes keep dying at the "sort it" and "remember it exists" steps, and you'd rather an assistant did that work than a plugin you configured at 1am.

Both can work. Really. They just ask different things of you.

Obsidian asks for upkeep. Saner.AI asks you to trust its AI, and to pay once you outgrow the free plan. Which cost can you live with?

## Saner.AI vs Obsidian at a glance

## Why this choice matters more with ADHD

Most note apps handle capture fine. The trouble is the boring middle. Sorting. Finding. Getting reminded.

An app that plans and reminds for you hits the real weak spot. An app that needs *you* to plan and maintain everything hands the heavy lifting to your weakest skill. Not ideal.

(If forgetting things is the bigger issue for you, start with [ADHD forgetfulness](https://adhdproductivity.org/adhd-forgetfulness/).)

## How Obsidian works for ADHD

![How Obsidian works for ADHD](https://storage.ghost.io/c/99/b0/99b001cf-099d-4600-ba8b-c373f317b704/content/images/2026/10/image-111.png)

Obsidian stores every note as a plain Markdown file in a folder on your computer (a "vault"). You link notes with double brackets, and it shows you which notes point back to the current one. There's a graph view, a whiteboard-style Canvas, and thousands of community plugins.

### Where Obsidian shines

- **You own your files.** They're plain text. If Obsidian disappeared tomorrow, your notes would still open in any text editor.
- **It's free.** Personal use has always been free, and since February 2025 the commercial licence is optional, so it's free for work too

- **Linking suits ADHD thinking.** Lots of us think in jumps anyway. Backlinks turn the jumps into a map.

- **Daily Notes is quietly great.** The core [Daily Notes plugin](https://obsidian.md/help/plugins/daily-notes?ref=adhdproductivity.org) opens a fresh, dated page each day. One place to dump everything, automatically organised by date.

### Where Obsidian hurts for ADHD

- **The plugin rabbit hole.** "Thousands of plugins" is catnip for hyperfocus. You can lose a weekend building a perfect dashboard and never write a note in it. (My [ADHD hyperfocus](https://adhdproductivity.org/adhd-hyperfocus/) post is for you.)

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/99/b0/99b001cf-099d-4600-ba8b-c373f317b704/content/images/2026/10/image-109.png)

- **Nothing sorts itself.** Every folder, tag and link is a decision you make. Decisions are expensive when you're tired.
- **Out of sight, out of mind.** Obsidian doesn't remind you of anything by default. Notes sit there until you go looking.
- **Tasks and calendar are bolt-ons.** Task plugins exist, but they're another thing to set up and maintain.
- **Sync costs extra.** Official Obsidian Sync is $4/month billed yearly, or $5 monthly.

### An ADHD-proof Obsidian setup (if you choose it)

If Obsidian is your pick, set it up small and stay small for a month:

1. Turn on **Daily Notes** and **Templates** (both core plugins)
2. Make a daily template with three headings: *Inbox*, *Today's 3*, *Done*
3. Create four folders: Projects, Areas, Resources, Archive
4. Allow yourself **three community plugins max** for the first 30 days. Write any others you want in a note called "Later."
5. Pin today's daily note so it opens on launch
6. Put a 10-minute weekly review in your calendar to move things out of daily notes into folders

## How Saner.AI works for ADHD

Saner.AI is an AI assistant that combines notes, tasks, email and calendar. You capture things roughly, and the assistant (called Skai) helps organise them and bring them back when needed.

- **Fast capture:** Chrome extension, voice-to-text, mobile apps, and "Smart Add" for quick idea capture
- **AI sorting:** auto-tagging and auto-foldering, so you can dump first and sort never
- **Resurfacing:** a "Relevant Notes" feature that shows similar notes you saved before, plus semantic search
- **Ask your notes:** questions across notes, meeting recaps, PDFs and docs in plain language
- **Calendar:** Google Calendar sync, plus Outlook Calendar, with a timeline view and time-blocking
- **Proactive check-ins:** scheduled daily summaries of your calendar, overdue tasks and recent notes

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/99/b0/99b001cf-099d-4600-ba8b-c373f317b704/content/images/2026/10/image-113.png)

- **Focus Box:** pin your top tasks so the list doesn't swallow them
- **Lock-screen focus task:** Live Activities on mobile

### Where Saner.AI shines for ADHD

- **Capture with zero decisions.** You don't have to know where something goes. That removes the wall between "thought" and "saved."
- **It comes to you.** Daily summaries and reminders mean you don't have to remember to check your second brain.
- **One place for scattered inputs.** Notes, emails and calendar in one assistant cuts down on app-hopping.
- **Very little to tinker with.** Fewer settings means fewer ways to procrastinate by "improving the system."

### Where Saner.AI falls short

- **It's a cloud app.** Your notes aren't plain files sitting on your drive.
- **The free plan is tight.**
- **Less customisation.** No plugin library. No themes. Builders will feel boxed in.

## Head to head: which handles common ADHD problems better? Obsidian or Saner.AI?

### Monday morning brain dump

**In Obsidian:** open today's Daily Note, type everything under *Inbox*, then drag the three most important items into *Today's 3*. Later in the week, move notes to folders by hand.

**In Saner.AI:** type or speak everything into one note or chat. Ask Skai to pull out the tasks and plan your day. Let auto-tagging file the rest.

\>> New to dumping your head out? My [ADHD brain dump](https://adhdproductivity.org/adhd-brain-dump/) guide shows you how.

### Email management

**In Obsidian:** copy the important part into a note, add a task with a due date through a task plugin, hope you check it.

**In Saner.AI:** connect Gmail or Outlook and turn the email into a task directly. It shows up on your timeline.

### "I know I saved something about this"

![](https://static.klipy.com/ii/d7aec6f6f171607374b2065c836f92f4/2b/a9/XLHND8K8.gif)

**In Obsidian:** search by keyword. Great, if you remember the exact words you used. (You won't.)

**In Saner.AI:** ask in plain language ("what did I save about the Lisbon trip budget?") and let semantic search find it even if you used different words.

## Who should pick which?

### Pick Obsidian if…

- You've kept a system going for 6+ months before
- You want your notes in plain files you fully control
- You think in links and like seeing connections
- You have a firm rule about plugins (and actually follow it)

### Pick Saner.AI if…

- Your systems usually die at sorting or reviewing
- You lose tasks between email, notes and calendar
- You want reminders and summaries to come to you
- You'd rather pay a bit than maintain things yourself

### Can you use both?

Yes. Some people do. Obsidian as the long-term library for writing and research. Saner.AI as the daily front door for capture, tasks and reminders. But for most people with ADHD, one home is better.

## My take

If you're asking this question, there's a decent chance you've already tried Obsidian once, built something gorgeous, and abandoned it. The system just leaned on the exact skills ADHD makes harder. Of course it fell over.

So here's the rule of thumb. If your problem is *ownership and control*, go Obsidian and cap the plugins. If your problem is *follow-through*, go with the tool that does more of the follow-through for you, which for most readers here is Saner.AI.

## FAQ

### Is Obsidian good for ADHD?

It can be, if you keep it simple. Obsidian is free, stores notes as plain files and links ideas well. The risk is spending more time customising plugins than writing notes, and it won't remind you of anything unless you set that up.

### Is Saner.AI free?

There's a free plan with 100 notes and 30 AI requests a month. Paid plans are Starter at $8/month and Standard at $16/month, with a discount for yearly billing

### Does Obsidian have AI?

Not built in. Its homepage doesn't list any AI features. Some community plugins add AI, but you'd set those up yourself.

### Can I move my Obsidian notes into Saner.AI?

Obsidian notes are Markdown files, and Saner.AI's July 2025 update improved its import flow for Markdown and PDF files.

### Which is better for ADHD on a tight budget?

Obsidian. It's free for personal and work use, and you only pay if you want official Sync. Saner.AI's free plan is fine for testing, but most daily users will hit its limits. Our [best free ADHD apps](https://adhdproductivity.org/best-free-adhd-apps/) list has more $0 options.

### Is Obsidian or Saner.AI better for a second brain?

Obsidian if you'll maintain it yourself. Saner.AI if you want the sorting and resurfacing done for you. Both follow the same capture, sort, resurface, review loop.
